Another Bad Debt

SIR: Hearty congratulations on the straight-shooting editorial, "A bad argument for a casino" (Herald, December 29). There will be many readers who will not only wish to applaud it but to endorse it in its entirety.
Was it just coincidence that my barbershop reading for the same day included an article from Time Australia for July 10, 1989, on gambling in the United States which contained the statement that "gambling has been part of every known society. What has changed in the past decade is that it is now publicly endorsed. Since the Government has got into the business of being an operator of gambling itself, it has given (betting) an imprimatur."
The use of gambling to pay off debts is usually a disastrous exercise in the lives of individuals. Our State politicians should not be encouraging it. Far better to have "sat down and counted the cost before beginning to build"(Luke 14:28).
