The story After his father dies, Calvin (Ice Cube) inherits his struggling barbershop on Chicago's south side. Seeing it as a burden and a waste of effort, he sells it to a loan shark. Soon afterwards, Calvin begins to understand how important the shop is to the neighbourhood. It dawns on him that he is the one who has sold out and tries to buy the shop back.
The hype The National Association of Cosmetologists, which represents barbers across the US, is seeking $US10 million ($16 million) in damages from the civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson. The Reverend said some jokes in Barbershop portrayed Martin Luther King jnr in a negative light and threatened to lead a boycott of the film if the offending scenes were not edited out.
What the critics say "What makes Barbershop so likable, with all its flaws, is that it has none of the pushiness and decibel volume of most contemporary comedies ... Sitting in a barbershop listening to the neighbourhood characters try to out-B.S. one another should be relaxing, a chance to put your feet up and give vent to your gripes, and that's what the movie is."
